Use the community room as a classroom
After retired, some people support each other for years, and some people use their residual heat. In the Wuchang Telecom community, every Saturday afternoon, 72-year-old Wu Peixiang always came to the community room early to wait for the children. For 6 years, he insisted on tutoring the children in the community free of charge every week.
"What does this story tell us? Please raise your hands to answer." On the afternoon of the 28th, Wu Peixiang asked the five children in the activity room. He is tutoring the children in writing and 5 children answer in turn. He has white hair, a kind face, and frequently nods and smiles, encouraging the children to express boldly.
These five children are all pupils from nearby elementary schools, of different ages. After they answered the questions, Wu Peixiang took out a few blank sheets of paper and shared them with everyone.
"It's been a bit cold recently, and there are fewer children here," Wu Peixiang told Chutian Metropolis Daily. Most of the children he tutored were children of migrant workers from other places. In the past 6 years, he has coached more than 100 children and has never asked for a penny.
Before retiring, Wu Peixiang was a chemistry teacher at Wuchang Experimental Middle School. After retirement, he became a community volunteer.
One day in early 2014, Wu Peixiang went to the market near the community to buy vegetables, and found a stall owner who was looking after the children in elementary school while doing business. During the conversation, he learned that the stall owner was uneasy about leaving the child alone at home, and could not afford the cost of the training class, so he could only bring the child with him.
"If you can be trusted, I will help you tutor your child for free." Wu Peixiang said. He revealed his identity and the stall owner was very grateful. So, Peixiang picked up his schoolbag, took the child to the community neighborhood committee, and sat in the hall to help the child with math homework.
After several coaching sessions, the child's math performance has improved significantly. After hearing from other migrant parents from other places, they sought out Peixiang Xiang for help. In this way, Wu Peixiang tutored more and more children, and at the same time tutored more than 20 children at the same time. The community neighborhood committee took the initiative to vacate the activity room, provided tables and chairs, bought a small blackboard, and used it for free.
In the summer vacation of that year, Wu Peixiang took a class every two days for two and a half hours each time. Among them, the first hour and a half tutored mathematics, and the second hour tutored the composition. "When tutoring mathematics, I will explain the homework to children of different grades; the composition is tutoring together, and the main use is general writing." Wu Peixiang told reporters.
In order to make the tutoring more effective, Wu Peixiang bought the papers and workbooks at her own expense and distributed them to the children for free. With his careful guidance, many children's math and composition scores have improved significantly.
After the summer vacation of 2014, Wu Peixiang's tutoring class became twice a week. He divided the children into two groups by grade, and had classes on Wednesday and Sunday. Since last year, his physical condition was much worse than before, so he only reduced the class to once a week, and the time was set on Saturday afternoon, about 3 hours each time.
In addition to free tutoring, Wu Peixiang also told parents his phone number and address. "You are welcome to come to me whenever the child needs it," he said.
9-year-old "Flowing Flowers" Yangyang said, "I have been taking a teacher's tutoring lesson for more than six months. He is very patient and not at all stern. Sometimes I have problems after class, and I still call or go to Ask the teacher at home. "
After each tutoring session, Wu Peixiang will wait until all the children have been picked up by his parents before he leaves. Ms. Changjiang Jia said: "I have also listened to the teacher Mrs. Xie in class with the children. The elderly not only taught the textbook knowledge, but also planted the seeds of goodness in the hearts of the children, allowing them to feel love and harvest the sun.
"Where can I live as a teacher for a lifetime? I'm proud of my career in teaching and educating people. As long as my body allows me, I will definitely continue to do it." Said Peixiang. (Chutian Metropolis Daily reporter Li Qing Zou Bin)
